Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis - symptoms and how to test

The disorder known as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is characterized by developing benign (noncancerous) tumours termed papillomas in the respiratory tract. Since humans are a frequent host of this virus, it is estimated that between 75 and 80% of both sexes will be infected with HPV at some time in their life if they are not vaccinated. The appearance of the vocal cords on examination suggests recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. The diagnosis of RRP can be confirmed by a biopsy, which is also used to rule out the presence of any malignant or precancerous alterations in the lesions.
