Prostate cancer Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) Prostatitis Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
The prostate gland produces a fluid with sperm cells from the testicles and fluids from other glands comprising semen.
During the digital rectal exam (DRE), a doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the patient's rectum to feel for lumps, enlargements, or areas of hardness that might indicate prostate cancer. The procedure lasts for less than a minute and, while uncomfortable, should cause no pain.
The Prostate Specific Antigen test is a blood test for detecting prostate cancer. High PSA levels may indicate the presence of prostate cancer. Still, they may also be benign prostatic hyperplasia or inflammation of the prostate gland (also known as prostatitis) due to an infection or other cause.
