Late-stage HIV infection - symptoms and how to test
Without HIV therapy, those infected with HIV would inevitably have AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) as the virus gradually erodes their immune system. When HIV infection reaches this point, it is in its last stages. It affects those with compromised immune systems. Patients identified with HIV later in the course of infection are more likely to have unfavourable health outcomes and to spread the virus to others. When HIV reaches a later stage, medication is initiated or maintained to preserve immune function.
