Human papillomavirus (HPV) - symptoms and how to test

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a member of a large family of extremely widespread viruses. Most individuals do not react to them, but some kinds can cause genital warts or cancer. When HPV enters the body, it causes skin problems. Although HPV may infect anybody who has had sexual contact, it is more common among persons with several sexual partners. Without protection from vaccination, nearly everyone who engages in sexual activity will get HPV at some point. The primary objective of testing is to detect HPV-caused abnormal cervical cells with severe cell changes (also called precancerous lesions) so that they can be removed to prevent the development of invasive cancers.
