Damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs is extensive in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic condition. The cells that secrete mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids are disrupted in people with cystic fibrosis. Males and girls are equally at risk for developing cystic fibrosis, which has affected an estimated 30,000 persons in the United States. A parent who is a known carrier of cystic fibrosis is the most significant risk factor. Carrier (or genetic) testing is an integral part of CF diagnosis. It also provides parents with valuable information about the likelihood that they will have a child affected by the disease, which may be used in making vital decisions about their family's future.
